Overview
In the (STEM) sciences, there remains a pressing need in our region to increase opportunities for all students to develop to their full academic and career potential. Further, there is an under-representation of people from African American, Native American, and Hispanic backgrounds in the key professions of mathematics, science, computer science, engineering, communications, and the health professions. Designed to meet this need, Temple University’s STEM-UP Program supports talented high school students who seek a STEM experience in college.
STEM-UP is a 6-week Summer Leadership experience for current high school students. Grounded by the belief that everyone is to have access to opportunities and personal growth, the STEM UP Program is driven to ensure that all students have access to a high-quality STEM experience.
The program consists of four main modules: Math Concepts, Real World Science, Science Literacy, and applied STEM. Technology is also an integral part of the curriculum. To integrate math and science through technology, our Computer Science course (DATA 8) introduce students to Python coding. Coding is a proven tool that improves STEM proficiencies and supports educational equity via collaboration and inclusion.
Along with academia, students reap the full benefits of an on-campus experience in a higher education setting. Students are also engaged in weekly student development initiatives that promote and prepare them for transition from high school to college.
